Das Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupé ist das Topmodell der W 111 Coupés
die von 1961 bis 1971 gebaut wurden. Konstruktiv und stilistisch orientieren sich die Luxus-Coupés an den im August 1959 vorgestellten Heckflossen-Limousinen der Baureihe W 111. So verfügen auch die Zweitürer über die bei den Limousinen als Weltinnovation eingeführte Sicherheitskarosserie mit Knautschzonen
Im September 1969 debütiert das 280 SE 3.5 Coupé als leistungsstärkste Version mit einem völlig neu entwickelten 3,5-Liter-V8-Motor
